What better way to teach a subject than taking a hands on look.

A road trip is a great way to spend time as a family.

It gives you time to reconnect and talk without the daily stresses of life.

You don’t have any television distractions, phones ringing or a house chores.
You can even go on a road trip when you have a baby and toddler.

Let share some of tips on “How to Plan Field Trips for Your Baby and Toddler“:

Step 1: Plan your trip.
First you need to decide how far you are wanting to go.
Decide where you are going and pack a map or atlas. [our kiddies help me to read those map ;)]
Keep the long stretches of driving to a minimum with toddlers.
Do you want to keep it close to home?
Are you willing to travel a couple of hours or overnight to get to your destination?
Keep these things in mind while you preform you search.

Step 2: Think of the local museums, zoos and educational destinations.
These are usually great one day field trips.
Check for web sites and find the hours and any upcoming events that might be interesting to your child in addition to the regular services.

Step 3: Think of any historical places close to your home.
Are there forts or old courthouses? What about famous trails?
There are also usually historical museums near every home.
These can be as simple as a art museum or an army museum from your area.
You might think that your toddlers wouldn’t be interested in these types of things but usually they will surprise you. [indeed! ;)]
Just remember for these to keep it fun, provide stories and interesting points about whatever you’re looking at.
Keep it short and quick, do not spend too much time looking at items because your toddlers are likely to get bored.
Before you go you could check out library books on the topics of the museum to build their interest.
Again, once you find these places check the Internet to see if they have any events coming soon and see if there are any kid friendly days or tours.

Step 4: Always keep in mind the science-museums.
Toddlers love these and they are often designed to appeal to children’s hands on nature.
Toddlers can often play with exhibits and have a little more freedom than regular museums.

Step 5: Look at local businesses.
Toddlers love going to farms to see what happens there and play with the animals.
Most farmers are more than happy to give your little ones a look around and explain their jobs.
A trip to the veterinarian office or another local office of some sort.
Toddlers will love visiting their local rescue squad or fire station to get a close up look at the equipment, vehicles and heroes who work there.
Just be sure with these to always call ahead and schedule a time. Offices and rescue houses are usually happy to have visitors as long as it’s a good time for them.

Step 6: Do not overlook the obvious.
A day at the beach to do a study on the sand or animals before romping in the waves.
A day at the park to do a science experiment before letting loose to play.

Step 7: Book your hotels ahead of time so that you are not stuck without a place to stay.
With toddlers, you do not have an option of just sleeping in a car.

Step 8: Keep the activities to a minimum.
Remember that young children are easily overstimulated, so allow plenty of down time.

Step 9: Take a potty chair with you if your child is potty trained or in the process of it, and plan to make stops to use it when necessary.
There is no possible way toddlers can hold it until you get to a petrol station.

Step 10: Bring plenty of snacks and drinks.
Toddlers get hungry quickly and when they are hungry they are cranky.
A screaming toddler can make a trip tricky for everyone, so prepare ahead of time with convenient snacks.

Step 11: Carry plenty of cash or a credit card for emergencies such as car trouble.
You do not want to be stranded with your lil toddler.

Step 12: Allow for plenty of stops to stretch your legs, let the toddlers out of their car seats to run around a bit and use the restroom.

Notes:

Always try to check ahead for hours and events.
Check out websites whenever possible.
Try to visit the library before hand to get books to peek your child’s interest.
